Writing 201: Poetry, Day Ten – Future

The finale.writing-101-june-2014-class-badge-2

Prompt: Future

Form: Sonnet (settled on the 8-6 form)

Device: Chiasmus

Inspiration: The past, present and future of Harry Dresden.

The future is like a river and the river flows to the future.
Illusion of control, raw, precise and elemental.
With the left it takes, with the right its gives and control of the illusion is key.
From the core of his being, he is champion, fire, mind and force,
Calling, fighting, reaching, answering.
Magic is a river flowing through the landscape of his world,
the worlds landscape ever flowing,
Calm, silent, turbulent and piercing.

Dark beneath, light above, the past fills him, love and death,
rushes from him, above light and beneath dark.
Still he turns, swims, breathes, drowns.
The presents horizons storm, rages and releases,
Purposeful, indistinct, true and false.
The river flows to the future, the future is like a river.

 The River

Writing 201: Poetry, Day Nine – Landscape

Prompt: Landscapewriting-101-june-2014-class-badge-2

Form: Found Poem

Device: Enumeration

Inspiration: The Landscape of the character (I know, I’m stretching the ‘landscape’ premise quite a bit).  Source taken from the sample Chapter One of the First Harry Dresden.

The heavily and new wizard Harry Dresden.

Lost, serious and seriously exploding magic.

Kind,  haunted, intoxicating and surely.

Harry Dresden. Pure supernatural magic.

FIREThe mailman walked towards my office door, half an hour earlier than usual. He didn’t sound right. His footsteps fell more heavily, jauntily, and he whistled. A new guy. He whistled his way to my office door and then fell silent for a moment. Then he laughed.

Writing 201: Poetry, Day Eight – Drawer

Prompt: Drawerwriting-101-june-2014-class-badge-2

Form: Ode

Device : Apostrophe

Inspiration: Bob the Skull and is wanting of fleshly desires.

Atop my drawer there sits a skull,

it is his want to pontificate and mull.

Many a day my drawer I open

and there waits Bob his grin a wanton omen.

Why such eyes of gold and red, with voice of lust and dreams of bed.

Common and base no words unsaid,

my friend, my friend, you know you’re dead.

An offer to you, shade without form,

a day and a night in an all girl college dorm.

All I ask is your brain,

to aid me in my latest refrain.

Writing 201: Poetry, Day Seven – Fingers

Continuing the Harry Dresden theme.writing-101-june-2014-class-badge-2

Prompt: Fingers

Form: Prose Poem

Device : Assonance

Inspiration: Harry after waking from the dead and accepting and acknowledging the mantle of Winter Knight.

Winter’s fingers bite and breathe that gnaws.  Cold nights love brittle and hard.  Long the taste of blood lingers.  Hands and heart exposed, white and raw.  A bargain made, a hope delivered.  Bleak Queen, long limb and a Knights place. A true voice never meager.  Dark days, red lust and a strength in love.  Darkness contained, familiar, true and alone.

Writing 201: Poetry, Day Six – Hero

Week One of the challenge I based my theme on Tolkien, this week I think I will try for Jim Butchers Harry Dresden.

Prompt: Herowriting-101-june-2014-class-badge-2

Form: Ballad

Device : Anaphora/Epistrophe

Inspiration: Harry as he stands at the end of Skin Game. Winters Knight but still Harry.

Maids and maidens, knights and squires,

Harry Dresden, a bane and blessing to those who hire.

Faerie blessed and life cursed,

Harry Dresden, tall in leg, short in temper and conscience coerced.

Fire by hand and cold in vein,

Harry Dresden, heart of Stone, black but true.

Loyal friend and steadfast enemy,

Harry Dresden, father, hero and shade worthy.

Strong, fragile, fates outsider,

Harry Dresden, demon jailer, rule breaker, dinosaur rider.

Writing 201: Poetry, Day Five – Fog

Day Five and this may be my final Tolkien based poetry, or maybe not.

Prompt: Fogwriting-101-june-2014-class-badge-2

Form: Elegy

Device: Metaphor

Inspiration: The Battle on the Fields of Gondor and the fog of war.  Aragorn striking down Orc’s.

My sword arm, strong, wielding, heavy as the falling oak,

Death and fear, new born and screaming.

Withered skin and moulted blood, discarded by my hand like decayed fruit,

A life cold and dark, its waters impregnable upon a midnight sea.

Friend, foe, warrior and craven, one mind one goal, connected, separate and alive in the fog of war,

The surge and beating of the vein, life and pain, a rivers flow.

Weary steps and homes hearth, a shining city, beacon and light upon the storm,

Mother, father a stony embrace, trust and fear, leader and destroyer.

Trust is a must, not all will lust as,

Earth born and friendship sworn.

Never alone, three homegrown, family to the bone.

I have a need for Old Tody’s weed,

All washed down with a merry mead.
