Writing 101, Day Seven: Give and Take

Write a post based on the contrast between two things — whether people, objects, emotions, places, or something else.writing-101-june-2014-class-badge-2
Write your post in the form of a dialogue. You can create a strong opposition between the two speakers — a lovers’ quarrel or a fierce political debate, for example. Or you could aim to highlight the difference in tone and style between the two different speakers — your call!

In today’s challenge I tried to work on the elements of dialogue & speech tags as referenced in the writing 101 articles and develop the contract between reading the conversation and inferring the context.

A Wookiee by any other name.

Tucked away in a dark corner of Chalmun’s Cantina the occupants of the booth stop their conversation as the bartender Wuhrer approaches. Looking down on the table’s residents he places hands on his hips, framing his ample stomach.

He faces the larger of the pair and says, “we don’t serve his kind in here,” inclining his head towards the other occupant, “He’ll have to go.”

Conversation and music stops as the Wookiee takes his feet off the table top and stands to this full 2m plus height, towering over Wuhrer.

Grabbing him by his dirty white shirt the Wookiee easily lifts Wuhrer of the ground. “AUGUUUGUUUGUUUGRRRGHHHHH” he says loudly.

Shaking from side to side the Wookiee’s associate can be heard with no trouble throughout the bars silence, “Beep beep, whooo. Eep beep?”

“What is he saying,” Wuhrer asks as Chewbucka keeps him dangling.

Looking round the bar at the silent and unsupportive faces Wuhrer says, “I changed my mind, he can stay, no problem here”

Lowering Wuhrer to the ground the Wookiee brushes imaginary dust from his shoulders and says, “Wawoohrghuug!”

Steadying himself Wuhrer begins to back away, “Let me get you some drinks on the house.”

R2-D2 advances on Wuhrer, utility arm extended as blue energy crackles and sparks at it’s tip, “Beep weep, boo whooo beep.”

Chewbucka reaches out and grabs Wuhrer by the shoulder. Wincing in pain and unable to back away, he looks to Wookiee, “I don’t speak droid, no trouble I promise.”

Releasing Wuber one more he stands him up straight, slaps him on the arm and says, “Uuoooogggooahhggaaaggguuuooo,” Wuber winces and stumbles sideways.

Hands up, and palms out Wuhrer backs away, “We’re all friends here aren’t we. Drinks coming right up.”

The regular noise of the bar and surrounding tables begins to pick up as Chewbacca sits placing his feet back on the table. “Aulrgrhhhugr, ooah,” he says.

R2-D2’s indicator light flashes rapidly and he rocks slightly as he speaks, “Weet whoo bo boo beep”.

Chewbacca looks at his friend, and a low rumble begins to emerge. The Wookiee’s reaches out with this left arm and slaps the table repeatedly. He places his right hand on his stomach and begins to pat it gently. “brrwhh.. FAT….haargh,” he says and continues to laugh.

As an example the post without the dialogue & speech tags, does it still work for the reader?

Tucked away in a dark corner of Chalmun’s Cantina the occupants of the booth stop their conversation as the bartender Wuhrer approaches. Looking down at the table’s residents he places hands on his hips, framing his ample stomach.
